Ignite Your Art - "What a peculiar, surprising, inspiring, exciting art course this is!"- Kristina T

  • Course
  • 24 Lessons

Kick-start a collection of intuitive or abstract art by focusing on creating a collection. This is a combination of a live recording of a class and pre-prepared lessons to gather your thoughts. You'll be working on your inspiration and then watching me create my collection whilst creating yours.

Each painting will lead you to create more as you work on more pieces towards a cohesive collection.

Ease in fairly gently in the first week, meditating on your future direction, looking at past work, and inspiration. Remember that as an artist you do not have a linear path. We are here to explore and become masterful. Then watch me paint live over three to four weeks in real-time as you follow the recordings of Ignite Your Art that took place in January 2022. You will hear me answer student questions as they come up. I am no longer on Facebook but there is a community here on From A Place of Wonder that you can join to share your work and ask me questions in addition to the chat box.

You might decide to paint in a purely abstract way or mix up observational painting in an intuitive way. This is up to you!

Watch me create a major part of my  Sonder collection, most of which sold later in the Spring of 2022 to one collector at the Lilford Gallery in Kent. I work on a variety of sizes from small to medium format, answering student questions as I paint. Watching me will inspire you to become looser and more intuitive with your work. It's motivating!

You have lifetime access to this course.

Testimonials

Ooh I LOVED it.. I always seem to get a lot of work done when I'm doing one of your courses.  The format was interesting as well - it certainly did ignite my art - enabling me to get some new work into an exhibition by the end of Feb., that I otherwise just wouldn't have had...

-Lucy

Ignite Your Art was the most marvellous way to start a new phase of my life..... It turned out to be so much more than a 'learn how to paint" course'.

Gabriella's holistic approach towards being creative advocated a regular practice of journaling as a reflection tool for my painting, meditation to calm my very busy creative brain  and exercise. Gabriella is so generous at sharing these processes within her own practice and gives you an honest insight into her painting thought processes.  She shared technical and practical painting information through live video sessions and encouraged live participation.

I have been painting for over 40 years as a hobby and teaching the subject in schools and this course has taken my process to the next level.  I'm painting with more focus, more intent and more confidence.

- Mel

I enjoyed Ignite Your Art immensely. It came at a moment, when I felt stuck and uncreative, so Gabriella’s demos, task suggestions, and encouraging comments really ignited my art again, and had me explore brighter colours and new approaches to abstraction.
It was such a joyful course.

-Kristina

There is something mesmerising and heartening about watching Gabriella paint. We hear her thought process, watch the decision-making, enjoy the ebb and flow, see the development of the paintings and experience the highs and lows. By doing this it helps to galvanise us into action, and inspire us to work on our own paintings with a similar sense of fearlessness.

This course gave me the confidence to tackle issues in my paintings - to go in bravely and make drastic changes, and then work with whatever the results, sometimes good, sometimes less so. Gabriella is so open and honest about her process, both generous and knowledgeable.

Although your own style of painting may be very different to Gabriella’s, you can’t help but be inspired.

-Antonia

Gabriella takes us on an adventure as she makes this series of paintings throughout the course. She encourages the holistic approach to making art and this is coupled with interesting discussion and exercises in colour, abstraction and narrative. It's a joy to watch her paint and hear her share her thoughts so generously.

The colour exercises were a particular favourite and are still inspiring my work after the course.'

Is this course right for you?

YES this is right for you if:

•you're someone who's always wanted to try abstraction or intuitive painting

•you want a kick start into creating a collection that stretches you

•you're familiar with acrylic paint and intend to use it for the course

•you enjoy watching other artists paint

•you want to immerse yourself in painting intensively for a short time with a lot to show for it

•you don't have time to do this live but you're a self starter and know you'll enjoy working alone with only the recordings to watch, working at your own pace

NO this isn't for you if:

•you're an oil painter - though you could probably gain something from everything other than the actual painting techniques

•you need to be frequently accountable and don't have time to devote to regular painting. Though you can contact me I will not be chasing you up to complete work

•you're a complete novice to painting

•you're looking for a figurative or representational course

•if you want transcripts of my videos

• you don't want to watch me paint for between 40 minutes to an hour every other day or so.

What's actually going to happen?

During the first module  you get access to a few thoughtful lessons which you can take action on before we begin to paint. These are designed to clarify what you specifically want to aim for in the three weeks we have together. Remember everything you achieve is a step closer and I am on hand via the messaging system and comments in the course for help.

In the second week we paint warm-up pieces on paper, investigating mark-making with a variety of brushes and tools on different surfaces and journalling on our aims. You might want to do things in a similar way to me or you might find that you strongly want to do things differently, rebelling is good!

Key parts of my painting that I created off-camera have been recorded and uploaded along with all the live content produced.

There is a Facebook group that you can join in the knowledge that the majority of students have been through the live course in January 2022.

What I really want is to fire you up into taking action with your painting - knowing that it's rarely perfect - and sticking with it, allowing what you do like to lead you to develop more work.

Let's explore what's inside and get it out onto the surfaces you want to work on!

This is time to allow your fantasies of what your art could be to be born. From there they can grow.

Welcome week

Hello - it's great to have you here!

Please binge-watch all this week's content so that you can plan when to work on things and source anything you realise you need, in plenty of time for next week.

Here's a downloadable pdf. of this week at a glance:

week one.pdf 252.85 KB

There's a materials list to download in the third lesson this week but the only thing you need to ensure you have right now is a journal and a sketchbook OR plenty of good quality cartridge paper. I began by using paper from my A3 sketchbook for the colour exercises and then progressed on to my A1 thicker cartridge but cut down to A4 /A5 with masked off edges. Just in case I create some masterpieces while I'm experimenting!

I show you what I'm going to be using during the course as a whole in the third lesson.

I have a lot of wooden surfaces but please know I don't expect to create wonderful paintings on all my pieces of wood. I'll be thrilled if 50% of the surfaces I've bought end up as paintings that I love enough to display! I've also got a stack of paintings that I never completed or recently began leaning up against the studio wall, to grab if I feel inspired. These are all various sizes but that doesn't matter to me. Hopefully, you'll all have some canvases like this.

As I described when you were considering signing up for this course, I'm aiming at creating my own intuitive abstract collection/s this year, alongside my still life work. I'm very much a believer in following your heart and accepting that your desires for your art can shift and there is nothing wrong with that.

I know that galleries and commissioners of art seek a certain level of consistency of style, or genre particularly, which is perfectly understandable. However, to reach a way - or ways of working, that have this strength and clarity, we must allow ourselves to explore to reach a consistency of approach.

The richness and personal satisfaction of creating your process, one that results in paintings that are recognisably yours, will then become apparent.

For most of us, it's important to create A LOT, revealing to yourself what your ingredients for a wonderful body of paintings, are. I'll be demonstrating my own way into creating a collection while investigating different approaches to abstract and intuitive work through week 2. I want all of us to try these but if you know quickly what your preferred approach is please go with it. That being said stay open-minded because you might discover something unexpected.

I'm here to ask questions of, to be watched and to support you in your foray into intuitive or abstract painting. We'll be doing it together.

If you are here after January 2022 then you can still reach me and show me your work. You can message me via the speech bubble with any questions and you can also email me at gabs@gabriellabuckingham.com to send me images of anything if you'd like a second opinion. When the Facebook group is ready you can do this there.

The new Facebook group address for all Brave in Paint students will appear HERE when it is open to join on January 1st 2023. As a few of you may know, unfortunately my Facebook account was hacked in December 2022 and I no longer have access to any groups I set up and am starting again with one group for all my students.

Until you do the pre-work you won't be sure what your aims are; or perhaps you will!? That's what makes this whole thing exciting - ultimately, we're all so different. It's impossible to plan truly original expressive art - there's always beauty in chance and responding to each mark we make in the moment.

If you're fairly new to painting you might understandably feel the need to copy what I do at the start - you'll quickly reach a point where you will want to move away from that. We must trust ourselves to bring out what's inside in combination with responding to this. The flow that happens during the chain reaction of a painting is what I'd love us all to experience.

You'll be ignited into taking action with your painting - knowing that it's rarely perfect - it's a process of growth through repetition. Without the "doing" and as we will see - the "being" all you have are nebulous feelings and images that could have been. Imagine if you gave yourself the chance to paint daily - how much you could bring to life!

N.B> This course was recorded in 2022 - I've since changed my brand to From A Place of Wonder - if you'd like me to share your work now please tag me on instagram @fromaplaceofwonder and use #igniteyourart #fromaplaceofwonder - thanks! Ignore what I say about tags in this video!

Week 2 - Fire Up

Good morning everyone! Welcome to week 2 :)

In the first round of this course I had the live timetable here. Now of course there are unedited videos to watch available on demand. I do hope they will give you as close an experience as possible to being with me live. Feel free to send any questions to me privately that come up for you throughout the course.

I hope that you managed to meditate and dance or exercise daily from whenever you began the course and if you have, that you already feel the difference in your daily life and your attitude to painting

Initially please download this pdf. of the week's overview and the key journal questions for you
Week 2 overview.pdf 252.06 KB

Let me know how it's going for you in the comments below if you'd like to. Have you had any realisations?

In this video, I show you how I was thinking near the end of week one:

https://youtu.be/1sDsw9pamvg

I hope you found the video helpful. If you would like to create your own assessment to share how you're thinking in the new Facebook group after it opens in Jan 2023 please do. Or vocalise it to yourself. It's amazing how things consolidate when said out loud. Do try that -  ideally record yourself for your own use. Things like this will help write about your collection ultimately, for a website or gallery.

The aim this week is to explore different approaches to abstract or intuitive work with your "ingredients" list foremost in your mind so that your own desires for your work have centre stage and start to develop.

Withhold your desires for outcomes as long as you can; that way delightful or insightful discoveries happen. Open yourself up to possibilities that you won't know, until they happen.

If something I'm suggesting takes you away from what you want to be doing then do the thing you want to be doing! If you're lost, however, allow yourself to experiment or do similar things to me.

This week I'm continuing to work on thick acid-free cartridge paper but will move onto high-quality water colour paper with a couple of the exercises that excite me most and that I want to integrate into my collection for the art fair in Surrey in early March. I'll be taking works on paper to display in my browser - if all goes well! Remember that only you are setting a deadline for yourself.

In relation to a future collection what's exciting for you to aim for and also achievable?

You choose how or IF you want to do any exercise and on what surface and how large you want to work.

Depending on where you are in your thinking and practice you might want to go from paper to your chosen surface in a couple of days.  For some, it might take a week or more of exploring before you're ready to do that. Like me, you might want to do a little of both.

I hope that some of the things we do together will fire you up enough that you feel you cannot wait to extend those particular explorations onto whatever surface excites you at the weekend. If you can give yourself the luxury of going deeper into exploration, do so. There's nothing better than giving yourself that freedom. If you haven't got a deadline then enjoy this exploratory time and make the most of it.

Week 3 - Collection Building

By now you might have already begun to work on your collection - beyond the experiments.. Or you may not.

Do not worry for a second if you haven't. Everyone has different priorities and time available. It could be that by now you've now decided that exploring on paper is actually what you need and you want to continue with that alone for the next two weeks.

I seem to have moved onto my small wood pieces and am working at random over some old works. This is all part of clarifying for myself what my collection is going to be concerned with. I'm going to have listen to my feelings when I come into the studio on Monday morning at 9.30am GMT.

As you saw from the round up last week I have a general subject - landscape - but not a fixed approach. There's the pattern-like / aerial abstract portrayal; a more loose and yet figurative approach and one piece that's even more distilled.

I will paint live daily this week: 9.30am everyday except Wednesday when I will be starting at 1pm. All times are GMT.

There is no print out this week. Continue to meditate and journal so that you recognise what you truly want to create - or rather - simply allow yourself to paint however you feel you want to at any one point. Instead of allowing shoulds to enter in. Ideally I want to do the same and I will trust that wherever I lead myself will be the right thing for now.
